Learn how to use the Creative Grids Stripology XL slotted quilting ruler to cut fabric strips quickly and accurately, with step-by-step instructions and common mistakes to avoid.

Quick Answer

The Creative Grids Stripology XL ruler lets you cut multiple fabric strips at once using its patented slot system, saving time and improving accuracy. With its non-slip grip and oversized 17-3/4 x 22-inch surface, you can cut strips up to 22 inches long without repositioning your fabric.

Why the Stripology XL Speeds Up Cutting

Traditional strip cutting requires you to measure and cut one strip at a time, often realigning the ruler for each pass. The Stripology XL eliminates that repetition. Its slotted design lets you cut multiple strips of the same width by moving your rotary cutter through the slot, not the ruler edge. The ruler stays put, so your strips are consistently sized from the first cut to the last.

The extra-large size (17-3/4 x 22 inches) also means you can cut wider fabric pieces—up to a fat quarter or half-yard—without folding or repositioning. That reduces handling and keeps your fabric grain straight.

When a Smaller Ruler Might Be Better

The Stripology XL is large and can feel cumbersome on a small cutting mat. If you work with precuts or small scraps, the 6-1/2 x 24-inch Stripology Mini or a standard 6 x 24-inch ruler may be easier to handle. The XL also requires a mat at least 24 x 36 inches to accommodate its full cutting range. If your workspace is tight, measure your mat before buying.

How to Cut Strips with the Stripology XL

  1. 1. Prepare Your Fabric: Press your fabric flat and fold it selvage to selvage, aligning the raw edges. Place it on your cutting mat with the folded edge closest to you. The Stripology XL works best when the fabric is at least 22 inches wide (a half-yard or larger). Check that your fabric is wrinkle-free and the fold is straight. A crooked fold will cause uneven strips.
  2. 2. Position the Ruler: Lay the Stripology XL on top of the fabric so the ruler's bottom edge aligns with the fabric's folded edge. The slot you plan to use should sit directly over the area you want to cut. The ruler's non-slip grip will hold it in place once you apply light pressure. Do not slide the ruler after placing it—the grip can drag the fabric. Lift and reposition if needed.
  3. 3. Align the Slot with Your Desired Strip Width: The ruler has marked slots at common strip widths (e.g., 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 inches). Choose the slot that matches the width you need. The slot's edge acts as your cutting guide, so the distance from the ruler's bottom edge to the slot determines your strip width. Double-check that you're using the correct slot. Cutting through the wrong slot will give you the wrong strip width.
  4. 4. Make the Cut: Insert your rotary cutter into the slot at the far end of the ruler. Apply firm, even pressure and cut away from your body, following the slot to the opposite end. Keep the cutter blade against the slot's edge for a straight cut. Use a sharp rotary blade. A dull blade can skip or tear the fabric, and it requires extra pressure that may shift the ruler.
  5. 5. Cut Multiple Strips Without Repositioning: After cutting the first strip, simply move the ruler to align the next slot (or the same slot for another strip of the same width) over the uncut fabric. The ruler's grip holds it steady, so you can cut strip after strip without realigning the fabric. If your fabric shifts, stop and realign. Cutting multiple strips from a shifted fabric will produce uneven widths.
  6. 6. Remove the Cut Strips: Once you've cut all the strips you need, lift the ruler straight up (don't slide it) and remove the cut strips. The non-slip grip releases easily when you lift vertically. Stack the strips immediately or label them. It's easy to mix up widths when cutting several sizes in one session.
